House Foreign Affairs Chairman Lantos Dies at Age 80
Posted by Sarah Jane Staats at 03:01 PM
We are saddened to hear the news that House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos (D-CA) passed away early this morning due to complications from esophageal cancer (see press release from his office). As my colleague Sheila Herrling and I wrote in a Views from the Center blog when Chairman Lantos was first diagnosed and decided not to run for reelection in 2008, we have lost another congressional champion for global development. Our thoughts are with the Chairman's family and his dedicated staff.

Mr Lantos was a tireless champion of human rights, and founder of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus in the US Congress. His legacy will last through the centuries. He will be missed very much.
