Global Development: Views from the Center

What’s Hot and What’s Not in Global Development for 2010

December 21, 2009

By Sarah Jane Staats

As 2009 draws to a close, it’s a good time for a little light-hearted reflection on what’s hot and what’s not for global development in 2010.

I hope you’ll add your suggestions to the list!

  1. Well, at least I’m in the same category as Angelina and Brad.

I think you have to try a little harder to find a debater for Collier though. Moyo does not cover what is seen as Collier’s main contribution, the integration of military and economic approaches to development.

  2. Hot: Global Health Initiative

    Not: PEPFAR

  3. Hot: Microsavings
    Not: Microcredit

    Hot: RCTs
    Not: PRSPs

Hot: World Cup in South Africa
Not: African Nations Cup in Angola

  4. hot- more money
    not- effective development

  5. Ronald A. Schwarz Says:

    Hot: Fair Trade

Comment: Fair Trade certification gives consumers the opportunity to influence corporate policy in ways that can benefit farmers in developing countries. For example, Cadbury’s decision on chocolate.

  6. HOT: Public Private Partnerships

    NOT: Corporate Social Responsibility

  7. Arguably partly (bur only partly) regrettable, but
Hot: More of everything from an increasing number of helpers
Not Hot: Paris (Declaration for national ownership and the other mega-goods)

  8. HOT … value adding for society
COLD … profit for Wall Street bankers with value destruction for society
